Description

Cloud Cycle, a dynamic SaaS startup, is transforming the construction industry with advanced data management, focusing on ensuring the reliable delivery of concrete by measuring and adjusting slump and flow in real-time.

Purpose

I joined Cloud Cycle during their preparation for the HS2 (High Speed Two) Innovation Accelerator program, which aims to commercialise innovative digital products for Europe’s largest infrastructure project. My role was to design and develop a prototype for Cloud Cycle’s data visualisation solution to optimise sustainable concrete management, reducing water and energy consumption, waste, and achieving significant carbon savings.

Project

  • Data Visualisation for Concrete Management: Designed and developed a prototype to monitor and adjust concrete properties in real-time, aligning with circular economy principles to maintain resource quality and value.

Collaboration

I worked closely with:

  • CEO and CTO: Defined product strategy, identified requirements, and developed features.
  • Industry Experts and Users: Conducted extensive research and user interviews to inform design decisions.

Role

As the lead designer and de facto product owner, my responsibilities included:

  • Conducting comprehensive industry research on concrete management and the supply chain.
  • Creating a service blueprint and proto-personas for key user groups (concrete companies, construction firms, HS2).
  • Leading user research with participants from Cloud Cycle’s and HS2’s networks to identify user objectives, motivations, and pain points.
  • Designing compelling UI and user flows for the prototype.
  • Managing the entire product lifecycle, from strategy to feature development and final prototype showcase.

Success Metrics

The success of this project was measured by:

  • User Engagement: Positive feedback from key stakeholders and increased interest from potential users.
  • Environmental Impact: Potential reductions in concrete demand, carbon emissions, and water usage.
  • Industry Recognition: Securing a spot in the HS2 Innovation Accelerator program.

Outcome

The prototype was successfully showcased at the HS2 Innovation Accelerator demo day, leading to Cloud Cycle being selected for the program. Key outcomes included:

  • Validation of Technology: Demonstrated the value of Cloud Cycle’s solution across the entire supply chain and its environmental benefits.
  • Industry Opportunities: Provided the chance to work on Europe’s largest infrastructure projects and further develop technology for optimising concrete usage.

Conclusion

Working with Cloud Cycle on the HS2 Innovation Accelerator project was an exciting and impactful experience. By leveraging advanced data management and a user-centric design approach, we developed a solution that not only optimises concrete management but also aligns with circular economy principles to drive significant environmental benefits. This case study highlights the importance of innovation and collaboration in creating sustainable and efficient solutions for the construction industry.
